“The idea for the video came from a moment during the show when Qwel performed one of Qwazaar’s tracks. Qwazaar later said they liked to keep their fans on their toes. That’s when it clicked for Miguel who decided to use the footage to make seem like they were performing Jam One’s mix.

As spectators we tend to forget that a lot of work goes into some of the clips we watch on YouTube. Needless to say condensing an hour of footage into two minutes requires creativity and vision. Especially when trying to maintain the essence of a performance and that’s exactly what it took to create this video (not to mention a fistful of passion, patience and fierce dedication.) We forget that what we watch is more than just video but, instead, a smooth joining of music and images. To quote Miguel “Audio is the blueprint for all my videos, working closely with Jam One allowed us the ability to approach this video from a deeper artistic and inventive perspective, both audio and visually.

But why a video for Typical Cats? Jam One put it best when he said, “Typical cats were my first introduction to Chicago’s underground Hip-Hop music. Being a turntablist in the making at that time, hearing DJ Natural’s cuts on the album inspired me, being from Chicago and putting out something of that caliber showed me that the turntable could truly be an instrument. When moving forward pay homage to those that lead you to become what you are now. Remember the Musicians/DJ’s/Graffiti Artists/Bboys/Emcee’s that opened your eyes and changed your life.”

Qwazaar & Batsauce – BAT MEETS BLAINE
Digital/CD + 7inch (I Know/Til It’s Done)
Released: 9/13/2011

Qwazaar & Batsauce follow up their masterful Style Be The King EP (2011, Fifth Element/Galapagos4) with a 14-track juggernaut entitled Bat Meets Blaine. The record is an absolute rarity, a series of inspired sessions from a world-class MC & producer team at the height of their respective powers. It’s a record all true heads should cop and that all lab scientists can envy.Tasteful guest shots only augment the chemistry: Denizen Kane, Onry Ozzborn (GraySkul/DarkTime Sunshine), Offwhyte, KP the Ilustrado (The Pacifics), Lady Daisey, and DJ Bizkid round out a stellar supporting cast.

“Batsauce’s production … pushes Qwazaar’s voice into new territory that has him in the booth reacting in the moment,…Often on the record Qwa’s approach takes on bluesy work song inflections. It places Qwa in the heart of a lineage that aligns him with Lead Belly as much as Slick Rick.” — Impose Magazine

Style Be The King EP Review by Scratched Vinyl

“Qwazaar first appeared on my radar earlier this year when a guest appearance on DJ Cosm’s Time and Space became the stand out track of the album. The emcee from Chicago crew Typical Cats displayed a mix of intelligent lyrics, unique delivery, and charisma on the mic that immediately grabbed my attention. When I heard that he had a new project in the works with producer Batsauce, I was interested. This nine song EP previewing the full length album to come gives quite an introduction to the duo’s sound.

Batsauce has been around for a while, producing for such emcees as Mr. Lif and Akrobatik. For this EP, he draws heavily on the sounds of garage and psychedelic rock from the ‘60s, with plenty of fuzzy, wah wah-ed and reverb-heavy guitars alongside horns and maracas and tambourines. He contrasts this with really crisp and sharp drums with heavy snare hits. It provides a nice compliment for Qwazaar’s rhymes, who has one of the more unique deliveries in hip hop. It’s a voice that at time hints at a southern drawl, and other times brings to mind Slick Rick’s British accent. He can move incredibly fast within lines and verses, but he can also drop simple hooks with a melodic delivery that will make the song stick in your head. His lyrics are incredibly smart and playful, and he’s constantly switching up his flow. Qwazaar likes to challenge his listeners to think for themselves and to constantly strive for a better life. This is apparent in songs like “Mind Murder” and “Rule,” which features a chorus with a group singing the line “I’m going to rule my own life.”

If this is the teaser EP for the full length album, I can only imagine the treat we’re in for. Batsauce and Qwazaar both prove themselves top-tier talents with this EP. I can only hope that this is the start of a new phase in both of their careers.”

Purchase Typical Cats self-titled debut album

Conceived within the lair of Chicago’s legendary WHPK Wednesday Night Rap Show, the group known as Typical Cats deliver one of those rare hip-hop albums that hits hard in all aspects of the culture. Consisting of MCs Qwel, Qwazaar and Denizen Kane (Dennis Kim of I Was Born With Two Tongues) and producer/DJ Natural, the Typical Cats album is a record that is nothing short of straight up hip hop, provocative lyricism, original concepts, and the raw energy you would expect from three of the most promising emcees in Chicago.

Editorial Reviews

Review:

Urb Magazine (January Issue)(4 Stars) The operative word here is balance. With three MC’s from seemingly disparate backgrounds in spoken word, hip-hop and all things in between, Typical Cats – the trio of of Chicago MC’s Qwel, Qwazaar, and Denizen Kane – might have easily yielded a train wreck of sound and wordage, as so many with similar ambitions have in the past. Instead, Civil Service is thoughtful and rounded, with straight forward, self-aware coffee house philosophizing and quality – but not overly sleek – producation by DJ Natural. This comes after a four-year hiatus to pursue solo careers; and while individual performances on the album stand out – Denizen Kane’s solo spoken word piece “12th Story”, for example, the natural sense of symmetry these three achieve together is far more rewarding. On “Easy Cause It Is,” Qwel’s eager cadence slides achingly between major and minor keys, relieved only by the velvety growl of Denizen Kane’s baritone. And if both of the aforementioned group members excessively intellectualize about spirituality and psychology, Qwazaar is likely to reflect on things more tangible, disecting society and politics with poetic, street-level sensibility. –Urb Magazine

Customer Review

(4.0 out of 5 stars) Something different from Chicago, July 23, 2007
By Cevon A. Smith (Baltimore, MD)

Despite the hyperbolic description, Outerlimitz really are unique, apocalyptic visionaries in the Chicago underground hip-hop scene. Qwazaar is without a doubt the stand-out voice in this project and in all actuality, he is the best emcee associated with the Galapagos 4 indy label. The dark and heavy production of Silence in combination with the hard hitting and raw vocals of Qwa and He.llsent make this little known gem well worth a look. Its been about 6 years since a Qwazaar solo, we probably should hope for a sophomore release.

Released: 9/13/2011 Galapagos4

Qwazaar & Batsauce follow up their masterful Style Be The King EP (2011, Fifth Element/Galapagos4) with a 14-track juggernaut entitled Bat Meets Blaine. The record is an absolute rarity, a series of inspired sessions from a world-class MC & producer team at the height of their respective powers. It’s a record all true heads should cop and that all lab scientists can envy.

At this point in his career, Qwa’s pedigree is unquestionable. South Side representative extraordinaire; Low End theorist; endlessly inventive with flows and increasingly daring in subject and range. Long hailed for his vocal ability, the decades have seen Qwa transform into the rare artist whose symphonic flow is effortlessly matched to pitch-perfect confessional content. The moments that meld both into a unique storytelling voice are rare—Rakim’s “The Ghetto” comes to mind, as do Black Thought’s post-bop excursions. Qwa’s true corollary, however, aren’t his fellow MCs—it’s Charlie Parker, whose wrenching solos feature a technical genius that are only matched by their sorrow—the sound of Icarus’ wings melting. He’s found his proper spar this go-round—Batsauce is a Berlin-based turntable Gillespie (URB recently dubbed him “the next ‘it’ thing in…underground hip hop”), and their first full-length is a true titanic, trans-Atlantic meeting of the minds. Tasteful guest shots only augment the chemistry: Denizen Kane, Onry Ozzborn, Offwhyte, KP the Ilustrado of The Pacifics, Lady Daisey, and DJ Bizkid round out a stellar supporting cast.

Bird once famously said, “If you don’t live it, it won’t come out your horn.” Bat Meets Blaine is a record of tremendous vitality and reach—Chicago, LA, Jacksonville, and Berlin are a part of its geographic DNA. It numbers several underground classics (Typical Cats, Walk Through Walls, Suicide Prevention, etc.) as its bona-fide predecessors. Its progenitors have earned accolades and stripes and props in print and in person. But most importantly, it has been soaked in rum and in the river, and it has emerged as a testament to pain and power, and it plays beautifully. Bird and Diz, meet Bat and Blaine.

It took me approximately one listen of “Bat Meets Blaine” to throw it in my top 5 best rap albums of 2011. It’s just that damn good. Qwazaar is easily one of the most slept-on MCs in the universe,

mybackpackisbiggerthanyours.blogspot.com

Qwazaar and Batsauce “…” murder this. I am stern in my stance to call this dude one of Chicago’s top 3 emcees, forever ever. Forever ever. If his voice could be bronzed and placed on a shelf for all who imagine Chicago hip hop to listen to, he would be just above JUICE for the quintessential emcee sound of Chicago.
